NX70758 - EATON, Ronald Warr, Lt.
Nominal Roll details
Order of
the British Empire - Member (Military) (MBE)
"Lieut. Eaton was a Prisoner of War in Japanese hands from
Feb 42 to Aug 45. From Feb 42 until Apr 1943 he performed
administrative duties with detached working party camps, and was
forced in the interests of the men to adopt many subterfuges to
save them from long hours of work. These actions resulted in him
being brutally assaulted by the Japanese on many occasions,
which however did not deter him. From Apr 1943 until Dec 1943 he
was working on the Burma-Siam railway and displayed the same
courage. Later, during a cholera epidemic, he showed outstanding
devotion to duty, and in risky conditions, acted as registrar of
the camp hospital. In this capacity he again courageously faced
Japanese demands for sick men to work, being assaulted on many
occasions. This officer has been consistent in his attitude to
the Japanese wherein he displayed devotion to duty of an
exceptionally high order."
