Nominal Roll details

Military Medal (MM)

"At GEMAS on 15 January, 1942, two tanks endeavoured to proceed beyond our road block and opened fire with cannon and medium machine gun (MMG) on to our Anti Tank guns, which were disposed on each side of the road. From the fire, two of the Anti Tank gunners were wounded. Despite this heavy fire, Pte. McNiven crossed the road and treated one severely wounded man and then carried him to safety of a ditch. Despite the fire continuing, he returned and treated the other less severely wounded man and carried him to safety also.

Throughout all the period the wounded were being treated, enemy machine gun (MG) and mortar fire in addition to fire from the enemy tanks were being directed down the road. Pte. McNiven carried on his treatment of wounded unperturbed, and showed admirable courage and devotion to duty which I consider fully merits reward and I recommend he be awarded the Military Medal."
